New Asian fusion restaurant Samamy opens in Adelaide’s CBD

The brand-new Asian fusion restaurant has a split menu, offering Vietnamese food for lunch and Thai food for dinner.

Samamy has added even more colours to the vibrant fabric of Hindley Street, bringing bright pink, green, and neon to the popular CBD destination.

The brand-new Asian fusion restaurant has a split menu, offering Vietnamese food for lunch and Thai food for dinner. Of their varied offerings, owner Dang Nguyen says the salmon spring rolls and roast pork rice are the most popular of the Vietnamese options, and people are loving the green curry and pineapple fried rice for the Thai eats. They also have desserts, such as deep-fried ice cream.

Samamy also has its liquor licence. They of course serve up the regulars, but they also have a range of hot cocktails, which are basically delicious-sounding alcoholic teas, the most popular being the “English Rose” made of black tea, blood orange gin, and rose syrup. They also serve coffee, including Vietnamese coffee and egg coffee, which has condensed milk and egg yolk inside.

Like its list of innovative cocktails, the venue itself is filled with spunk. It has bright pink chairs and green walls, and it notably has dreamcatchers lining the wall.

Nguyen tells us the inspiration for both the name and the fit out comes from his son, Sam, and his wife, co-owner Amy Tran.

“When Sam was young, he would have a bad dream and cry throughout the night, so my wife made dreamcatchers, and they surprisingly worked,” he says.

“My wife likes pink, and Sam likes green, so we used a mix of both.”

While Nguyen was getting his PHD at UniSA, Tran supported him through her hospitality work, working in both Thai and Vietnamese restaurants in Norwood and Glenelg. Now that he has graduated, Nguyen is excited to help her achieve her dream of owning her own restaurant.

“Now it’s my turn to support her because she’s the one with a background in hospitality,” he explains.

Samamy is open Monday to Friday from 11am to 3pm and 5pm – 9:30pm, and Friday and Saturday nights until 10:30pm.
