This Saturday, an exciting new cultural space will be opening in the Adelaide Hills. The Adieu Bonjour Bookshop will feature a tightly curated selection of used books, literary fiction, literary nonfiction, cookbooks and drinks books, children’s books, and magazines. The eclectic range of titles has earned the bookshop the slogan, “the new and the old, the boutique and the iconic.”
In particular, Adieu Bonjour will be a hub for artists, writers, designers, musicians, and other creatives to find books relating to their work. Stocked authors include Françoise Sagan, Helon Habila, and Brian Eno, while young readers can enjoy the work of classic authors, such as Maurice Sendak, along with a range of fun recipe books
The bookshop was created and curated by Rachel Signer of Cleopatra Wines (formerly known as Persephone Wines). Also the author of You Had Me at Pét-Nat and publisher of Pipette Magazine, Signer will open Adieu Bonjour in the historic Ashton Post Office Café space on Lobethal Road.
“When the opportunity to open something in the post office space came up, I knew I had to take it,” owner and natural winemaker Rachel Signer reveals. “All I needed to do was give the space a fresh coat of paint and it feels like new.”

Adieu Bonjour will be located next to Cherry Bomb, a local café created by Tanya Schroeder that stocks a selection of cherry-flavoured favourites, and has quickly become a staple amongst locals and visitors alike.
“It’s nice being adjacent to Cherry Bomb, another woman-owned small business, and it’s so perfect that people can grab a book, then go next door to cosy up with a delicious coffee and toastie — and read,” Signer adds.
The opening on August 12 will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and during that time new books over $30 will be offered at 10% off. Free natural wine will be served to the background sounds of records being played.
Following the opening event, Adieu Bonjour is holding a special family event on Saturday, August 19. Families with readers under six are invited to join Rachel Signer in a 45-minute storytime at 10 a.m.
If you can’t make it to either of these opening celebrations, there will be plenty more events in the future. The bookshop has plans for authors to come in for readings, book signings, and cooking demonstrations. To make sure you never miss an event, you can keep up with Adieu Bonjour on Instagram.
