New café Mini HD opening in the CBD

Mini HD has a new name and a new space, but the concept is basically the same as its owners’ previous venue, McHenry Street’s HD Eatery.

A new café is coming to Grenfell Street… and you might recognise the owners!

Mini HD has a new name and a new space, but the concept is very similar to its owners’ previous venue, McHenry Street’s HD Eatery or Handsome and the Duchess. The third iteration of the much-loved coffee and quick eats shop is opening this week, slinging all of HD Eatery’s signature meals.

Sharing a space with Vietnamese rolls shop Bahn Mi, Mini HD will have Monastery roasted coffee, baguette sandwiches, salads––such as the popular chicken confit salad, and pastries. Co-owner Shinae Haider, who runs the venue with husband Syed, bakes the pastries, which range from orange and poppy seed cakes to almond croissants, on site each day.

Syed says he and his wife make many of the modern Australian food items with a special flare, weaving Asian and Middle Eastern influences throughout.

“We add Indian and floral spices into a lot of our food to season it nicely,” he says.

“Seasoning and texture makes food interesting… We love food and love cooking at home with a lot of flavour.”

In addition to preparing the café’s food and drinks, Syed also builds each interior himself. He says that although Mini HD is in a different location than HD Eatery, which closed March 2021, customers will “recognise it’s our style” based upon Syed’s self-built fit out.

While we haven’t yet seen the new café, the owner tells us we can expect the same retro, recycled style HD Eatery had. There will be old-school shades and lighting, wood panelling along the wall, and old-school wallpaper incorporated sporadically throughout the design. Syed wants the space to feel like home to its customers.

“We really try to create a homey feel, where guests can forget about worry, work, and emails – at least for a little while,” he says.
