New cafe, Young and Younger, brings retro coffee vibes to Athelstone

This new, family-run cafe in Adelaide’s East offers great coffee, baked goods and plants for sale with fresh loaves of bread available weekly.

New kids on the block, brothers Will and Sam Young bring you Young and Younger (YAY), the latest café to open in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs.

Opening just last week, the namesake retro inspired café has already been a hit with the locals.

“Everyone seems really excited that we’re here, and we’re so grateful for the warm welcome that we’ve had from the local community,” said part-owner Sam Young.

No stranger to the café scene, Sam brings a decade’s experience in hospitality, with YAY the second café in his growing portfolio which also includes sister café It Takes A Village, found in Edwardstown.

You’re bound to feel right at home at Young and Younger, with operations truly a family affair.

Encouraged to take over the space by their father (Basket Range Baker), high school teacher Will joined Sam, along with their partners to pull the space together.

“On any given day you’re likely to run into one Young or another (youngest brother Henry works for us too),” said Sam.

“My girlfriend Louise made our cups and saucers, as well as WIll’s fiancé Molly being responsible for the retro design choices and houseplants everywhere (which along with the ceramics are for sale).

“Young and Younger is really representative of all of us, and we want you to feel like part of the family.”

So, pull up a chair and order a cuppa – with beans from local roaster Vice Coffee along with a range of milk and alternative milks on offer.

If you’re after a bite to eat, their selection of cakes also caters for dietary needs such as vegan and gluten-free, with fare from local bakers Dukes and Western and Adelaide Hills Rustic Baking.

And don’t forget to pick yourself up a fresh loaf of bread supplied by Spectrum Bakery, available on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Though it’s a small space, Young and Younger is wheelchair accessible and family-friendly – so pack the kids in the car and be sure to order them some babycinos.

“We love to see how tall we can make a babycino,” jokes Sam.

You can find Young and Younger at 337 Gorge Road, Athelstone, open 7 days from 8am–1pm.
