Adelaide has officially welcomed a new independent publishing house as Pink Shorts Press opens in the historic Adelaide Arcade. Co-founded by Emily Hart and Margot Lloyd, the local venture celebrated its housewarming on Thursday, May 8th, and has big plans for bringing bold storytelling to the city.
The pair, both editors with heaps of industry experience, have returned to South Australia to launch the press and were thrilled to find a physical home in one of Adelaide’s most iconic buildings. This is thanks to Renew Adelaide, a not-for-profit organisation connecting creatives with vacant retail spaces.
“We always knew that Pink Shorts would thrive on strong local community in South Australia, which is why it’s so amazing to have found a home among the creatives and makers of the Adelaide Arcade, like Orchard Bookshop and Frida Las Vegas,” says Emily.

Located upstairs beside Two-Bit Villains, Pink Shorts Press is a space for the community, hosting everything from silent readings and read-aloud meetups to quirky concepts like literary speed dating. It will also be the home base for the press’s workshops, nicknamed ‘Wordshops’, where they will share insights on editing, language, brand storytelling and navigating writing in the age of AI.
At its heart, Pink Shorts Press is still all about the books. The team recently celebrated the re-release of Barbara Hanrahan’s Sea Green for its 50th anniversary, and two debut South Australian titles are slated for August alongside another Hanrahan reprint.
Adelaide Arcade General Manager Andrew Jonats says Pink Shorts Press is a perfect fit.
“Welcoming Pink Shorts Press to Adelaide Arcade is not only a big win for the precinct but also for the local, creative scene,” says Andrew.
Renew Adelaide CEO Gianna Murphy agrees.
“Pink Shorts is such an exciting new voice in Adelaide’s arts community. The team’s thoughtful approach
to making the written word both fun and accessible is unparalleled. We’re excited to work with the Pink Shorts as they forge a new path within Australia’s literary industry.”
With its quirky name, community-first ethos and deep literary roots, Pink Shorts Press looks set to become a beloved fixture in Adelaide’s arts scene.
