New community hub and café expansion at Thebarton

Mister Sunshine’s is bringing even more rays of light to Thebarton with the expansion of their café space and redevelopment of nearby park.

Mister Sunshine’s is bringing even more rays of light to Thebarton with the expansion of their café space.

This will go along with the redevelopment of the adjacent park transforming Admella Laneway into a community hub.

The George Street café is a popular brunch spot dishing up wholesome food, ethical coffee and sweet treats. Owner Lauro Martire has had big visions to expand their venue space and make better use of the nearby abandoned park.

After four years of lobbying and working with West Torrens council with the help of state government funding, approval has been granted and big things are coming.

Lauro says the new space will be a welcoming entrance point for people of the community to gather and have fun together.

The new space which is expected to be complete in 2 to 3 months, will have a basketball court, rock climbing, nature walks for the kids and two meeting spaces to hang out and relax.

There will also be an 80 metre festoon walkway with festoon lighting going from Admella Lane to Light Terrace.

Along with the new space, Lauro says George Street and Admella Lane will all be redone and will come with a nice wide footpath.

Mister Sunshine’s itself will also be expanding. Lauro says the are leasing out the space between Mister Sunshine’s and the new parklet area to build on what Mister Sunshine’s currently offers.

“There’ll be a new bar area, a new courtyard and dining area. It will open Mister Sunshine’s up and expand our space for functions,” Lauro says.

“It will give us another 50 seats and tie the entire space with new park area and outside.”

Lauro says with the expansion, Mister Sunshine’s will be offering more wine options, more cocktail options and more specialty coffee options.

They will also be introducing live music on the weekends in the new courtyard area.

Lauro says they have also approached the KWK Aboriginal department of SA to have the park given a traditional name.

“After five months of respectful communication we are excited to be GRANTED a kaurna name ‘Imparri Wama’ meaning ‘Meeting park’,” he said.

With the support of the community Lauro says they will begin a campaign to council to have this space officially named.

Mister Sunshine’s is located at 32 George St, Thebarton SA.
