New COVID-19 Case In SA Originated From Overseas

South Australia’s 14 day streak of no new COVID-19 cases has ended with the discovery of a new case last night.

SA Health’s chief public health officer, Professor Nicola Spurrier has announced that South Australia’s 14 day streak of no new COVID-19 cases has ended with the discovery of a new case last night.

Professor Spurrier says that the new case is a man in his 70s, who immigrated from the UK on March 20.

He was not found to have been infectious on the flight back and after returning home quarantined immediately.

He developed mild symptoms on March 24.

The symptoms noted were a loss of smell and taste, which at the time were not included in the formal list of symptoms and there were no public messaging to be wary of them.

Professor Spurrier says that her team is confident that this is not a case of community transmission.

He was tested on May 5, and has been quarantining since. Due to the fact that knew he was from a vulnerable age group, he has kept to himself and as a result only has had five close contacts in the time.

These five contacts have all been contacted and are quarantining with no symptoms displaying.

Professor Spurrier says that the long life of this virus in the case of this new gentleman is something they are aware is happening and it is not common.

While they are accounting for him to being infectious, the risk is extremely low.

The current case total stands at 439 cases, with two active cases in the state, and two recovering cases in hospital. The recovered rate is currently 99% in South Australia.

SA has recorded over 65,000 tests since February, with over 1000 tests conducted yesterday.

More to come.
