A new hotel apartment development is set to transform 2 Sturt Street in Mount Gambier, with plans for a modern, four-storey building offering 82 dual-key serviced apartments. The development will feature different accommodation options, including studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom suites, as well as four accessible suites. It’s set to provide a much-needed option for both locals and visitors looking for quality short-term accommodation in Mount Gambier.

The design of the hotel apartments is both simple and elegant, drawing on Mount Gambier’s historic architectural style while including modern elements. The building will use high-quality materials that will naturally weather over time, giving it a timeless feel that works with the local surroundings.

A key feature of the design is the undulating winter balconies that will run across the building’s facade. These balconies not only provide protection from the weather, but also offer private open spaces with stunning vistas to the north and south, adding both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits.

The new development will be built on a 3,180 square meter site, with a building footprint of 1,680 square meters. The hotel will offer several on-site facilities, including a reception area, gym, conference rooms, business lounge, amenities, and an alfresco BBQ area. There will be 65 car parking spaces, including accessible spots, and a drop-off area along Sturt Street for easy access to the hotel.

The hotel will house 82 dual-key suites, with a mix of 10 one-bedroom, 13 studio, and two two-bedroom apartments, as well as one accessible suite. The guest rooms will offer modern, comfortable interiors, with the ground-floor suites featuring landscaped courtyards that front Sturt Street. The upper-floor suites will benefit from deep winter balconies, which will provide guests with private outdoor spaces and panoramic views.

This development is historically significant as the site is heritage-listed. Some walls of the building date back to 1882 when it was a flour mill. The new hotel will honour Mount Gambier’s history with design features like natural stone accents around the windows, reminiscent of the old South Australian Hotel.

The Hotel Apartments development represents a new era of accommodation for Mount Gambier, meeting the growing demand for quality short-term stays in the city. The city has long been in need of more diverse, modern accommodation options, and this project is set to address that gap.

Public consultation for the project has already begun, allowing the community to provide input and feedback as the plans move forward. The development of these hotel apartments is an exciting step for Mount Gambier, as the city continues to grow and evolve.
