New Greek restaurant Zorba’s Taverna opens at West Lakes

Restaurant founder Alex Pericleous combined the name of former Hindley favourite Zorba’s Taverna with Zac’s Greek Restaurant’s old space.

Zorba’s Taverna, West Lake’s new Greek spot, opened Friday with a lakefront view and seafood-heavy cuisine.

The spot champions “traditional Greek flavours with a contemporary twist,” including lamb shoulders, whole fish, and great value seafood platters.

“We targeted the seafood side of things because of its beautiful waterfront location,” says founder Alex Pericleous.

Pericleous opened his restaurant in the former space of Zac’s Greek Restaurant, his childhood favourite.

“I was a regular at Zac’s growing up as a local in the area for 40 years,” he says.

“I know how much Greek food was missed by the locals.”

He sought to bring Greek food back to West Lakes, and did so with the name “Zorba’s Taverna,” the name of a former Hindley Street favourite.

“I’m family friends with the owners of the original Zorba’s on Hindley street, which was an icon of Greek food through the early 2000’s,” the owner says.

“They were open to me using the name, so now with Zorba’s and Zac’s, we’ve reborn two old goliaths of Greek food.”
