New Indian-South African restaurant brings food truck-inspired dining to Ebenezer Place

Aunty Megs Kitchen promises to give guests an incredibly immersive experience through authentic Indian-South African dishes.

Indian-South African fusion restaurant Aunty Meg’s Kitchen has officially opened its doors in Ebenezer Place.

The space was previously occupied by the incredible Parwana Afghan Kitchen, who now are located in Henley Beach.

Aunty Meg’s Kitchen promises to give guests an incredibly immersive experience through authentic Indian-South African dishes.

The official menu hasn’t been locked in just yet, but the restaurant will be sure to have all of your favourites. Some of our top picks are Bunny Chow, which is a loaf of bread that is cut into two halves. Once the soft centre is removed, the remaining loaf is then filled with curry. This curry is enjoyed with the soft bread that was removed, soaking up the tantalising curry juices.

Next are some culinary classics with Samoosas and a Lamb or Vegetarian Breyani curry. The Samoosas are made with beef, lamb, chicken, cheese & sweetcorn, cheese & onion, that are either fried or baked and filled with all of the spicy and savoury goodness.

The Lamb or Vegetarian Breyani is one of Aunty Meg’s Kitchen’s mouth-watering curries containing the 5 essential C’s. Corriander, cumin, cloves, cardamom and lots of chillies. Plus the 2 G’s, garlic and ginger.

And of course there’s also a dessert delicacy, Koeksisters, which is a traditional Afrikaner confectionery made of fried dough infused in syrup or honey.

But all of these dishes have been perfected over a long period of time. Owner Meg Barathlall is no stranger to the culinary game. She credits her long-standing catering business, Events Come True, as the jumping off point.

Events Come True started 8 years ago when Meg thought that there was a need to make the food that she desperately wanted to see in restaurants.

Meg started off by catering functions at the behest of her family and friends. Once she felt like she could get the business off of the ground, Meg and her family decided to purchase a food truck. You can still see Aunty Meg’s Kitchen following the food truck circuit in Semaphore every month as well as seeing its continued work with the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

“I’m just such a people person and love seeing all of these new businesses popping up in the food truck scene. I also love just chatting with people and customers and seeing what they gravitate towards. I’ve had such incredible support for the past few years and I have seen them come into the new place, which has been wonderful,” Meg says.

Aunty Meg’s Kitchen is the business’s first brick-and-mortar shop that promises to deliver on same incredible home-style cooking of the food truck.

Now that the operation has grown larger, the Barathlall family have banded together to support Meg’s vision.

“I have been so lucky to have the support that I have with my family. Without my sons and husband, it would have never been possible to get this place up and running in two weeks. And we’ve had such a warm reception from everyone, it’s been such an amazing start,” Meg says.

Aunty Meg’s Kitchen is truly a labour of love, that is sure to make an impression with those who are in need of a flavourful joy-filled meal.
