A new Korean restaurant has touched down in Adelaide’s CBD, and it’s bringing vibrant flavours of Korean cuisine with it. Located on Hyde Street, the newly opened eatery has been a long time coming for the owners, and marks the beginning of their new journey as restaurant owners.

“Horang is the first project of our long-awaited adventure and is a space where people can enjoy Korean culture along with various flavours and tastes,” says Owner, Sunny Kwak.

Sunny has been working in hospitality for the past 19 years, and has established herself in the industry in both Korea and Australia.

“I started as a bartender in Korea in my early 20s, I gained a foundation in various beverages including wine, coffee, and tea. I also worked as a manager at a sky lounge in Seoul for quite some time,” Sunny says.

“Then, while planning a restaurant business, I went on a study abroad trip to Australia, where I could learn about various flavours and cultures, and until recently, I worked as a chef for 9 years.”

Horang’s head chef used to run a bistro in a port city in Korea, and is planning on brining his gourmet style of cooking to Adelaide. As head chef, he’s curated a variety of Korean barbecue that can be enjoyed smoke-free and other Korean dishes that are carefully prepared by hand.

“The chef’s stubborn craftsmanship will increase your satisfaction,” Sunny says.

From the chef’s creations, Sunny is most fond of the spicy and sweet tiger bulgogi.

“Eating smoky pork belly grilled and wrapped with salad and Ssamjang (Korean classic seasoned pepper and soybean paste) will fill your mouth with happiness.”

As winter approaches, another favourite of hers is the braised beef short ribs. She says they are sure to warm you up as the weather gets increasingly colder.

The restaurant is open and spacious, perfect for gatherings with friends. Plus, it’s open until late on the weekends, making it the perfect place to kick back and relax.

“Horang will be another gathering space thats full of warmth and satisfaction. Even when the sun sets, we will brighten up the alley and welcome you.”

As for the name, Horang is the Korean word for tiger.

“The restaurant is a tiger-like cave hideaway, creating a comfortable space for customers.”
