New Laws Surrounding Child Buskers In Rundle Mall

Adelaide City Council has reviewed the age-limit of buskers in Rundle Mall following recent concerns raised by members of the public regarding young children performing during school hours.

As a result of the review, Council’s busking guidelines have been amended to better manage the issue of permits for school-age children.

“Council and the Rundle Mall Management Authority are very supportive of musicians, buskers and street performers in Rundle Mall, providing they don’t have an adverse impact on traders and shoppers,” Councillor Anne Moran said.

“We just want to ensure that children that are busking are appropriately supervised and their busking activities are not disrupting their education.”

Under the changes, children under the age of 16 will only be permitted to busk outside of school hours, 8.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday, only during daylight hours and will require written permission. As per the existing guidelines, children under the age of 12 must be constantly supervised by a parent / guardian.

Requests from school groups to perform during these hours are welcome and will be assessed on merit.

“The changes will ensure that children will still have the opportunity to perform in the Mall outside of school hours and on weekends,” Acting Lord Mayor David Plumrdige said.

Rundle Mall Management Authority General Manager Martin Haese said busking was an important element of the vibrancy of the Mall.

“These kinds of acts bring life, colour and entertainment year round and make a valuable contribution to the flavour of Rundle Mall.”

The updated busking guidelines are in place immediately and can be viewed at http://www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/services/permits-licenses/busking/
