New Lief and Little store adds big vibrancy to Glenelg foreshore

New coffee and shopping hotspot Lief and Little opens in Glenelg! Shop local homewares with a hot drink in your hand.

If you are after coffee with a spot of shopping, a new cafe and collective retail space Lief and Little in Glenelg has you covered.

Lief and Little was born in 2019 when owner Jennifer, who moved to Australia five years ago from the Netherlands, started sewing baby and mum accessories while she had her two young children at home.

“I did lots of markets in in South Australia and I sold really well,” Jennifer said.

Jennifer began working at a café where she made coffee and she said the idea of a concept store was simmering in her mind for quite some time.

“My dream has always been to open up a concept store because there are a lot of stores like that in Amsterdam. A concept store is a play café type of idea. It had been simmering in my head for a long time while I was doing what I was doing, so one day my husband was at the Glenelg playground with my two boys and thought, ‘why is there no coffee cart here?'”

Now, Lief and Little has opened its bricks and mortar store in Moseley Square overlooking the foreshore playground and is open every day, with people welcome to bring the kids along with their dogs.

“We are open everyday because we thought we wanted to be consistent for the locals to grab their coffee and we have had so many tourists because Glenelg is very touristy. It has been really good, we have been so busy in the holidays,” Jennifer said.

“A lot of the locals come in and they just love it. We have had amazing people coming in and I love a good chat with anyone.”

The store stocks a variety of items ranging from beautiful crystal and scented candles, skincare, teas, dried flowers and fruits, ceramics, jewellery, dried flower arrangements, earrings, prints, baby clothes and lullaby sleep comforters.

“There is a coffee cart where I can make coffees and inside we have got our local small businesses and we have got a whole section of pre-loved clothes as well, it is a bit of everything,” she said.

“We do treats, we have got coffee and different hot drinks, treats for kids, we have got cupcakes and cookies, the locals really love it. It makes the foreshore more lively.”

Jennifer shared her passion for supporting small and local businesses, which stems from when she first moved here.

“I wanted to support everyone when I opened the store and be able to give them the opportunity to sell face-to-face because it is hard doing it online nowadays. This gives them they can just sit back and let it sell,” she said.

Jennifer said opening the store has also given her a sense of place since making the big move to Australia.

“This has been a dream of mine to open a concept store like this so I am really thankful that this has happened and I can support local, and coming from a different country it is all new in a way. Going from homesick to having my own sewing business to now doing this, I really feel like I belong here,” she said
