New luxury villas planned for Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge

1834 Hotels is set to add a series of new boutique villas to Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge, with construction to begin soon.

1834 Hotels has announced plans for eight new boutique villas at Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge. The development is scheduled to begin mid-2025.

The Lodge, located in American River, was purchased by 1834 Hotels in 2021. Since then, the property has seen upgrades behind the scenes and a refreshed food and beverage offering. This new stage will introduce villas with bay views, private settings, and exclusive guest amenities. Guests will also have full access to existing hotel services.

“This marks a major step forward for both our hotel and the region,” said Andrew Bullock, CEO of 1834 Hotels. “We’re proud to invest in Kangaroo Island’s future with accommodation that complements its natural beauty and meets the growing demand for premium, experience-led stays.”

“With the upcoming launch of SeaLink’s new ferries and increased visitation to the island, we anticipate strong demand for high-quality accommodation. And with exciting developments like The Cliffs golf course underway at Pelican Lagoon, not far from American River, the future of this region is incredibly bright.”

Construction will be done by Wabi Systems. The villas will be based on the company’s Banksia 1 Model, with elevated structures, glass balustrades, and expansive glazing to frame the landscape.

“This is an exciting project for our team,” said Karl Plunkett, Owner & Director of Wabi Systems. “Our design embraces the surrounding landscape, with open plans and elevated structures that connect deeply to place.”

1834 Hotels has also partnered with Hospitality International for the interior fit-out. The work will be overseen by Managing Director Mark Flintoff.

“We were thrilled to be engaged by 1834 Hotels to assist with the interior fit-out of these villas,” said Mark Flintoff. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to help shape a new level of accommodation on the island.”

Alongside the new villas, 1834 Hotels will refurbish the existing bay view rooms in the main building. The project will deliver new bathrooms and a full interior upgrade. Hospitality International will also manage this work.

The villas and refurbished rooms are expected to open for the 2025–26 summer season. Bookings will launch mid-2025, with villa rates starting from $600 per night. Availability is expected to be limited.
