From tomorrow, Gouger Street will have a new restaurant called Aroi Modern Thai, which will add a modern twist to the authentic cuisine. The most exciting part? Renowned Thai chef Nu Suandokmai, who has over 30 years experience in cookery, was headhunted to help craft the menu and train the restaurants’ specialty chefs.
“Aroi will be authentic Thai but done in a modern way. I think that’s what Gouger Street is missing,” owner Gene Ge says.
It won’t all be Nu’s work, Aroi’s Head Chef Q will be leading the team showcasing his culinary artistry.
With a passion for blending authentic Thai flavours and contemporary techniques, he crafts exquisite dishes that will leave you captivated. From vibrant curries bursting with aromatic spices to delicate stir-fried creations, each plate is a masterpiece that showcases the depth and complexity of Thai cuisine.
He’ll be serving up highlights like slow cooked pork belly and baked baby barramundi which is marinated in red curry mousse and wrapped in banana leaves.
To make things extra special, the banana leaves will be burned in front of you so to make the dish extra smokey on your palate and put on a great display.

“The restaurant set up will have a relaxed feeling. It won’t be fine dining but it’s very elegant – we’ll even have soft jazz music playing in the background,” Gene says.
Aroi will be a welcome addition to Gouger Street and perfect for romantic dinners, gatherings with friends or celebrations.
