New Mount Barker hospital expansion begins, tripling capacity

Construction has begun on the new Mount Barker Hospital, a $320.8 million project that promises to enhance healthcare services in the region.

Construction has begun at the new Mount Barker Hospital as part of the South Australian Government $320.8 million commitment to the New Mount Barker Hospital Development.

The development is set to increase the area’s hospital beds from 34 to 102, deliver 35 consult rooms, establish a new 12-bed mental health unit, allow for onsite dispensing pharmacies and pathology laboratories, and expand capacity in specialist maternity, paediatric, rehabilitation, medical, surgical and palliative care beds.

Managed by Built, who recently worked on the hospital’s new Emergency Department, this project hopes to meet the needs of the growing Adelaide Hills Community. The first phase of construction involves the creation of temporary structures, civil and service infrastructure provisions, and changes to the existing car parks.

Pencilled in for mid-2025, the construction of a new multi-deck car park will also kick off, increasing total capacity from 431 to 654.

In his statement regarding the development, Premier Peter Malinauskas said: “More beds, more car parks, more staff, and more services – that’s what we’re delivering to Mount Barker.” He also commented on the need for localised healthcare, so people living in the hills don’t need to travel to metropolitan hospitals.

The new hospital will also include specialist beds for maternity, paediatric, mental health, palliative care, and rehabilitation services. The hospital will also gain access to state-of-the-art operating theatres and expanded chemotherapy and renal dialysis services.

The new Mount Barker Hospital upgrades are progressing with help from the local community and collaboration with healthcare professionals to ensure that the new hospital meets modern healthcare demands.

The project’s completion is eagerly anticipated by both the local community and healthcare professionals who are committed to delivering an advanced medical facility tailored to the evolving needs of Mount Barker and its surrounding areas.
