NEW national park mural comes to life at Adelaide Airport

Green Adelaide unveils Adelaide Airport’s first ever mural to celebrate Adelaide becoming a National Park City.

Created by Adelaide artist Lucinda Penn (aka LCND), the mural celebrates South Australia’s special connection to wildlife and nature.

Ms Penn’s mural, which was commissioned by Green Adelaide, will hold a special place at Adelaide Airport’s Gate 19.

“My piece represents Adelaide in an abstract and colourful way from the hills to the sea, from a vision of platypus in the Torrens, to our iconic hills landscape, as well as parks and wineries and the Mall’s Balls,” she said.

“I am honoured to be given the opportunity to create the first mural at Adelaide Airport. I hope my work will serve as the ultimate hello for airport arrivals and a fitting farewell for those who are flying out of Adelaide.”

The artwork is being officially launched at a special event at Adelaide Airport to celebrate the success of Adelaide National Park City Month, where more than 100 events took place across Greater Adelaide throughout June to publicly celebrate Adelaide’s status as a National Park City.

Green Adelaide Presiding Member Professor Chris Daniels said that the mural’s launch is the perfect conclusion to Adelaide National Park City Month, and a great way to build awareness about this movement to improve liveability in Greater Adelaide by connecting people with nature through everyday actions.

“The mural’s home at Adelaide Airport will ensure that domestic and international tourists will also be able to appreciate and connect with the movement,” he said.

“Having the Adelaide National Park City artwork painted as a mural at a venue as prominent as Adelaide Airport, is a major coup for promoting Greater Adelaide globally as a city that connects people with each other and nature – for everyone, everywhere, everyday!”

Adelaide Airport Executive General Manager, People, Culture and Terminals, Dermot O’Neill said the airport was delighted to be able to offer a prominent space to recognise and celebrate Adelaide’s National Park City status.

“We welcome opportunities to promote the work of local artists, as well as highlighting major South Australian events and achievements, so being able to do both through this mural is an excellent result,” Mr O’Neill said.

“The great thing is our passengers can view this wonderful mural in recognition of Adelaide becoming a National Park City, and at the same time enjoy the sweeping views from our gate lounges out over the green canopy of our city and the Adelaide Hills, which reinforces this achievement.”

Adelaide being a National Park City means our city is the first in Australia, and second globally to be part of an international movement that connects people with each other and nature. Find out more at: adelaidenationalparkcity.org
