With our plans of a European summer getaway being put on hold this year, it’s looking like there’s no better time to explore South Australia.

Popular seaside destination Aldinga has now welcomed Sicily Mare Pizzeria, allowing us to experience an Italian getaway in our own backyard.

Having only opened its doors last long weekend, Sicily Mare is Cono Gorgone’s third pizzeria, alongside his successful Sicily Pizzeria e Bar and Sicily Autostrada, and it is already proving to be a hit.

“Our opening weekend actually went really well. We had a lot of people coming in from the city, to those going for a Sunday drive, to the locals who have been really excited about us opening,” says Cono.

“With the new super school being built here, there’s a lot of movement happening in the area which is excellent.”

Unlike Sicily’s other projects, this new pizzeria, situated on the esplanade, is all about the sea or “Mare” (the Italian translation), from its stunning coastal views to its interior, and even some special additions to the menu.

Decked out in coastal colours of blue (representing the sea and Mediterranean), orange (for the sand and sun) and white, the restaurant’s simple décor allows these colours to shine.

As for the food, Cono explains how Sicily Mare offers the same menu as their East End location, but with a few new additions in the mix to highlight the fresh local seafood the area has to offer.

The two seafood inspired dishes available are the Frutta di Mare Cestin, an entrée of lightly floured local calamari, mussels and prawns served with lemon, rucola and mayonnaise, and a Frutta di Mare pizza with San Marzano pomodoro, trecce, local calamari, mussels and prawns.

Being by the coast, and with summer undoubtedly expected to be their busiest time of year, Cono also has plans for an outdoor alfresco area for diners to soak up the summer sun, as well as the development of an in-house Sicilian artisan gelato.

This homemade gelati is set to be served up right next door to the seaside pizzeria in time for the hotter months.

The restaurant has the capacity to seat up to 40 customers while the current COVID restrictions are in place so bookings are recommended.

However, takeaway and delivery is available for those in the Aldinga, Port Willunga and McLaren Vale area.

Sicily Mare is open every Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm until late, and on Sunday’s from 12pm until the late afternoon.

You can find Sicily Mare Pizzeria at 106-107 Esplanade, Aldinga.
