South Australia houses have many hidden gems when it comes to food, and an up-and-coming pizzeria is reaping the benefits of Adelaide’s local food scene.
Carrickalinga business Side Hustle pizza offers up authentic, handmade Neapolitan-style pizza and homemade gelato to locals and daytrippers alike!
You may be asking, what warrants that name, Side Hustle?
Chef owner Nicholas Barone started the business on a whim after a baking venture in 2019 started at his house.
“I have always loved baking and in 2019, I would bake things like focaccias and bagels filled with various antipasto to sell to local offices for business lunches,” Barone says.

Nicholas noticed a gap in the Carrickalinga market when spending time at his family holiday house.
“There was no venue housing authentic Neapolitan pizza around the area. Being good with my hands, I spent almost a month building my brick oven and getting a good dough recipe together, it was quite random to be honest,” Barone continued.
Couple that with procuring council permits and off he went.


After a few months, Carrickalinga locals would walk by Nicholas’s backyard, taking in the amazing smells and taking a peek at the Side Hustle Pizza sign, and news travelled through word of mouth. Did we mention, that he is only 21 years old?! As business grew, he withdrew from his university degree and got his girlfriend, parents and sister to help him out. Truly a family affair.
Side Hustle provides your favourite pizza go-to’s with Margherita, Capricciosa and Salamino to name a few. Side Hustle is also not opposed to hitting the sweet spot with its delicious Nutella pizza.

His big break came when he was approached by Melbourne Street business, Saintgarde, to set up a pizza station for an organised block party. From the success of networking through that event, Side Hustle booked four more catering events.
One year later, Side Hustle Pizza has grown its food product variety and been booked for exclusive events.
“Customer satisfaction makes me so grateful, If I didn’t have that support of the people enjoying my product, it would be so much harder,” Barone says.
Future events for Side Hustle Pizza include birthdays and a food & wine expo with BABO wines in October.
