New pop-up German gelati cart brings the flavours of Deutschland to the Adelaide Hills

As if Adelaide’s German town couldn’t get any better, a new German gelati cart has recently popped up in Hahndorf, with plans to expand into a permanent ice cream cafΓ© in the future. Introducing Eis Haus, the newest addition to Hahndorf’s thriving business hub, bringing a taste of Germany’s beloved summer treats to the Adelaide Hills.

Behind the venture is Brendon, an Adelaidean born to a German mother, who has fond memories of visiting the Christmas markets in Germany as a child. His family already ran a successful stall at the Hahndorf Christmas markets for the last 10 years, selling German Christmas cakes and mulled wine, but it wasn’t until last year that Brendon had the idea to bring a personal childhood favourite to life: Spaghettieis (Spaghetti Ice).

β€œGrowing up, I loved spaghetti and ice cream,” Brendon said. β€œWhat could be better than a bowl of spaghetti ice cream? So, we decided to introduce it at the markets last year, alongside our mulled wine stall.”

The response was overwhelming. Brendon and his team realised that not only were locals and tourists eager for a taste of Germany’s beloved frozen treat, but they also wanted to bring the Eis Haus experience to Hahndorf year-round. The pop-up cart outside Oak Tree Cottages was born in January, with plans to expand to a permanent location in the future.

What sets Eis Haus apart from other ice cream offerings in Adelaide is its commitment to creating an experience, not just serving ice cream. While traditional Italian gelato shops generally involve choosing flavours from the counter, German ice cream cafΓ©s are sit-down affairs where large menus are brought to your tables to order from.

“The main difference is it’s an experience of choosing your flavoured or themed sundae bowl rather than just choosing the ice cream flavours.”

At Eis Haus, guests can choose from three flavours: Sour Cherry, Chocolate Banana, and Spaghetti Ice. There are more flavours in the works, and guests will even have the chance to try potential flavours and vote for their favourites.

β€œWe want to offer something differentβ€”a themed experience where you choose your sundae bowl and flavour,” said Brendon. β€œIt’s about the fun and enjoyment of it, not just the ice cream itself.”

Looking ahead, Brendon plans to expand Eis Haus beyond the cart, with hopes to open a full-scale German-style cafΓ© in Hahndorf. The new space will feature an expanded menu with ice cream, coffee, biscuits, and other German treats.

β€œWe want to bring the authentic German experience to Hahndorf,” Brendon explained. β€œPeople come here for something unique, and we want to make sure they get that, whether it’s mulled wine in the winter or a scoop of gelati in the summer.”

With a focus on authenticity and quality, Eis Haus is quickly becoming a must-visit stop for anyone exploring Hahndorf, offering a true taste of Deutschland down under.
