It’s one of the most popular summer spots in Adelaide and now the seaside suburb of Henley Beach will be celebrating the opening of its new Public Plaza this weekend.
The $14.2 million upgrade began last year and has seen the main street between Military Road and Seaview Road converted into a public plaza as well as upgrades to the surrounding streetscapes.
An array of new eateries have also joined the food fare in the area including The Local Canteen café and Beachside Bagels, as well as additional outdoor dining added to existing restaurants such as Mia Margarita.
“This is the largest streetscape upgrade project we have delivered for our community, and it looks fantastic,” said Mayor Angela Evans.
“The project also includes a new plaza, where we have converted the bitumen roadway into a beautiful space with seating and greenery to benefit residents, visitors and the local businesses,” she said.
“We funded $2.6m for this project to benefit local residents as well as all South Australians who love visiting such an iconic beach. The improved amenity and focus on pedestrians make this a safer and more useable environment for years to come,” Minister Koutsantonis said.
The City of Charles Sturt received $2.6 million in funding from the State Government’s 2021/22 Open Spaces and Places for People Grants program, to assist with revitalising public spaces.
The total project cost $14.2 million with $9 million allocated through Council, $2.6 million of funding through SA Power Networks and $2.6 million from the State Government’s 2021/22 Open Spaces and Places for People Grants program.
This weekend’s celebrations will be held on Saturday and will commence with a Welcome to Country and didgeridoo performance from Jack Buckskin in the plaza at 10am.
The official opening of the plaza with speeches from Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP Minister for Energy and Mining and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and City of Charles Sturt Mayor Angela Evans will follow from 10:15am.
There will be family-friendly entertainment throughout the day with live entertainment and music, children’s activities, face painting, sausage sizzle and more.
