NEW RESTAURANT: Goodbye Smallfry, Hello Uncle And Authentic Hainanese Chicken Rice

Beloved seafood joint Smallfry makes way for authentic Hainanese Chicken Rice in Uncle’s opening.

When Smallfry announced their closure in late October, we were with you with how upsetting it was to say goodbye to the fish and chips-cum-seafood bar.

The good news is that the owners, Jack Lim and Nick Wang weren’t leaving forever, in fact, they’re returning on Monday with a brand new lunch hot spot serving something very exciting.

Under the name of Uncle, the new location will be putting authentic Hainanese Chicken Rice on the table. We spoke to Jack, who gave us a few hints on what to expect on Monday.

With a whole new fit out and decor that’ll fit the cuisine, you’ll be receiving a one dish wonder, Chicken and Rice. The best combination we could ask for.

It might be one dish only but you do get options in how your chicken is served. Uncle are providing slow poached chicken (in 76 degree broth) and served with rice. The other is a mouthwatering crispy skin chicken option, a recipe that’s been passed down Jack’s family.

Jack and Nick will also be teaming up with new head chef Tee, who will be leading the kitchen in this venture. Tee is originally from Malaysia but also has Hainanese ancestors so he’s extremely familiar with what actually makes authentic Hainanese Chicken Rice.

Family seems to be an integral theme in Uncle’s opening. The vibe we’re getting is food you’d make for your loved ones. In fact, we know that choosing Uncle as the name is a tribute to Jack’s uncle who ran a chicken rice restaurant in Malaysia years ago.

After Uncle’s passing, the family recipe for the authentic chicken rice was salvaged by Jack and put to good use with this new restaurant.

It’s here to contend as your next go to lunch spot, Uncle will be open from Monday to Wednesday from 11 am to 3:30 pm and Thursday and Friday from 11 am to 8:30 pm.

Uncle can be found at:
4A/8 Waymouth Street, Adelaide, South Australia 5000
