On Sunday May 28th, a brand new form of bicycle road racing, conceived and developed by local sports apparel business Blackchrome, will hit the streets of suburban Adelaide in a world premiere event.
“VeloGP” is a fast, adrenaline-fuelled form of road racing, where groups of four riders compete in sub 2-minute heats, eliminating one another until the final race to crown male and female VeloGP Champions.
Conceived in the depths of Covid-affected 2020, when sport sat on the bench and sportswear businesses like Blackchrome were all but shut down, VeloGP represents a spirit of “can do”.
Rather than sit idly on the sidelines, the Blackchrome team decided to build on their strong ties to amateur cycling and set about developing a new sport that would enable riders to compete on suburban streets in short, fast, highly competitive races.
The ambition was to build an event akin to what T20 is to Test Cricket or AFL 9s to Aussie Rules. Speed, skill and the thrill of competition.
This Sunday afternoon, in Myer Court, Beverley (home of Blackchrome’s Australian Headquarters), a field of 48 licensed local amateur cyclists will compete in the very first VeloGP event for more than $5,000 prize money.
Blackchrome’s Cycling Ambassador, 3-time World Champion and Olympian Annette Edmonson, will compete in an exhibition capacity, and will join 5AA’s Leith Forrest in providing expert commentary for the gathered crowd and global Facebook livestream audience.
Cycling Australia Commisairs will oversee the event, and local catering businesses including VW Bars, Caffettierra Carts, Woodville Lions Club and Dulwich Bakery will offer food and beverage options to the crowd, using reusable South Australian eCups to minimise waste.
Entry is free, with racing commencing at 2:30pm and finishing at 4:45pm.
