New KI music festival to host open-mic performances to support fire affected community
Kangaroo Island’s New Shoots Music Festival will be held on March 25 this year, following the success of the inaugural April ’22 fest.
However, with the March line-up yet to be announced and with eager partygoers keen for a sneak peek, New Shoots has announced an event on January 15.
The January event, called ‘Homegrown,’ is an open mic for local talent to perform, as two will be selected from the event to take the stage in March.
If you reckon you’ve got what it takes to sing your heart out and strum some strings under the Kangaroo Island spotlight, then you can try your luck at the Vivonne Bay General Store from 1pm onwards for your chance to be selected.
The open mic is free to attend, and the general public are invited to see emerging local talent give it their all, support their friends or purchase food and drinks from the store.
PA, speakers and microphones will be provided, so if you feel ill-equipped or unprepared, the venue is sure to be very accommodating.
New Shoots Music Festival was the shared vision of three CFS fighters on K.I. amidst the horrific bushfires in 2020, where flames tore through the region. The name is a reference to the growth and revival of the area in the aftermath, with the festival intended to support the community and raise money for those in need.
The non-for-profit committee behind New Shoots have chosen to support the Clontarf Foundation this year, which provides support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth. The foundation had 10,000 students enrolled in a Clontarf program in 2022 alone, with the participation of approximately 900 students in grade 12.
From conception in 2020 to anticipation in 2023, the New Shoots festivities have been supporting the growth of the local economy, the environment and Australia’s youth… All in the spirit of growth.
