Get ready for a vibrant community gathering when the Sunday Funday Markets make their debut in Adelaide this spring.
Taking place across the tree-lined grounds of the Hendrie Street Reserve in November, the family-friendly markets will have kids activities, shopping, food, and live music, all while supporting local South Australian businesses.
The Sunday Funday Markets were co-founded by Adelaide mums and long-time friends Katelyn Ellery and Kimberley Hunt.
“Together our families both love a good weekend market, we often attend as many as we can. For us, it was imperative to create a relaxed atmosphere allowing families to come and share in the events offerings and activities,” Katelyn says.
“It’s been amazing, within the first day of launching our applications online we reviewed over 70 applications. We are incredibly excited to announce our star line up of participating local businesses and vendors.”
“Our markets also offer the opportunity for young creatives to showcase their talents. We believe as parents ourselves that encouraging children to participate in markets teaches many fundamental skills such as self-esteem, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. This opportunity allows siblings, friends and families to buddy up together and sell their preloved, hand made gifts and so much more.”
The first Sunday Funday Market is set to be big with more than 100 stall holders and vendors boasting a variety of aspiring art stalls, independent makers and shakers, lifestyle stalls, fashion, children’s wear, vintage finds, food trucks and more.
“Local markets are really important events in any community. Not only do they add vibrancy, character, and convenience to a community, but they also give small businesses the opportunity to showcase their products and services to a wider audience,” Katelyn says.
“Together, our passion lies within supporting our state’s many small businesses and creating new interest and attraction around our state’s tourism appeal in regards to destinations and small brands that may otherwise be overlooked.”
The Sunday Funday Markets will support SA Heart Kids and the ausEE Inc, as Kimberley and Katelyn are both parents of children born with rare conditions.
Katelyn’s son Arlo was born with an incredibly rare heart defect Transposition of the Great Arteries and underwent major lifesaving open heart surgery at just one week old at the Melbourne Children’s Hospital.
“Arlo, who just turned one, is now a very healthy and happy little guy with a mended and very special strong heart. Arlo and the rest of our family were incredibly lucky to receive the unwavering support from SA Heart Kids during our families one month hospital stay in another state and feel forever grateful for their charitable work and so pleased to have a way of giving back for all that they do for families like us,” Katelyn says.
Kimberley’s son Hudson was born with rare and chronic severe immune disorder Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), which causes him to experience adverse reactions to many foods.
“Hudson is currently undergoing a number of procedures to help identify his main allergic reactions to help prevent future esophical flare ups. Hudson, like many other children diagnosed with EOE, will go on to lead normal and healthy lives with the further research and understanding of EoE and its important studies,” Katelyn says.
“Supporting ausEE Inc was a step forward in helping bring light to the organisation and Hudson’s ongoing condition.”
