A new Vietnamese restaurant, Com Viet, has opened in Kapunda, bringing authentic flavours with a twist. Owner Maggie, who grew up in Vietnam and travelled the country for work, experienced some of country’s best restaurants. After moving to Australia, she noticed a lack of truly authentic Vietnamese cooking, so was inspired to bring these genuine flavours to the surrounding Barossa area.
“I grew up in Vietnam and we had a restaurant running for years, but I didn’t know how to cook, my family led that side of things. When I finished my degree I started working as a quality controller and travelled through Vietnam from north to south. I was sent to some of the best restaurants in the country, and when I came to Australia there was a noticeable lack of true Vietnamese food,” Maggie says.
“I wanted to create a twist on Vietnamese food using local ingredients, so I started to cook for the local football club and spent a year at Kapunda High School as a canteen member. Instead of doing the casual pop-ups, people were asking me when I was going to open my own place, so I decided to go for it, this place will be authentically me!”
On the menu is a fusion of the classic Vietnamese flavour Maggie grew up loving with an Aussie influence.
“The Pho is my favourite, I truly make it how I like it, very aromatic, so I hope people come in a give it a go,” Maggie says.
Com Viet will be open from 10am to 4pm Wednesday to Saturday, as well as on Friday and Saturday nights. Being open during the day was a priority for Maggie, as she loves how restaurants operate like that back home.
“In Vietnam most restaurants have a space for everyone in the family, from 10am until 4pm anyone can come for coffee, soft drink, to grab food,” Maggie says.
“I love seeing people interact with each other, love seeing families, well have casual dining during the day, so all are welcome.”
