Explorers of the iconic Riesling Trail in Clare Valley can now enjoy a more sustainable and convenient way to stay hydrated, with a newly installed drinking water fountain by SA Water. Located at the Station Road car park at the start of the trail, this new addition helps walkers, cyclists, and residents stay refreshed as they discover the region.
This fountain is part of a growing network of public water stations across the state, providing an eco-friendly alternative to bottled water. With its convenient location, the fountain makes it easier for people to stay hydrated while exploring the trail, all while being mindful of the environment.
“Drinking fountains offer a reliable supply of safe, clean water for people while they’re outdoors, and their convenient locations make it more accessible for more people,” SA Water’s Manager of Brand and Community Connection Kellie McDonald said.
“Having this fountain in the Clare Valley also helps people to avoid using single-use plastic bottles, which in turn helps you save money and reduce plastic waste.
“Choosing tap over bottled water is a small but significant step towards creating a cleaner and healthier environment. Drinking water fountains help reduce the number of single-use plastic bottles making their way to landfill each year in the state.”
The Riesling Trail, which stretches 20 miles (35 km) through the Clare Valley, is one of South Australia’s most popular cycling routes. Known for its beautiful landscapes and world-class wineries, the trail attracts both professional cyclists and casual explorers. But, with long stretches of the trail sometimes taking visitors off the grid, having access to clean drinking water is vital.
“The new drinking fountain is another asset for visitors to the Riesling Trail that allows people to stay hydrated and explore the magnificent region,” Riesling Trail Management Committee Chairman Allan Mayfield said.
The new fountain is designed with accessibility in mind. Built in Australia, it features a water spout that is accessible for both children and people in wheelchairs. The innovative design includes a “water window” for easy and safe filling of bottles, along with a splash guard to reduce direct mouth contact with the nozzle.
SA Water has rolled out these drinking fountains across South Australia, making it easier for everyone to stay hydrated and reduce plastic waste. If you’re out exploring and need to refill your water bottle, you can easily find the nearest drinking fountain using the SA Water’s BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) app, available on the Apple App Store or Google Play.
