The Barossa Valley is set to welcome a world-class luxury resort, with IHG Hotels and Resorts named as the official operating partner for the proposed InterContinental Barossa Resort & Spa near Lyndoch.
The $100 million development is backed by the Strategic Alliance consortium and will feature 150 premium rooms, a high-end restaurant, function spaces, a wellness spa, a gym, and a pool—all with breathtaking views of one of Australia’s most iconic wine regions.
Expected to take two years to build, the project’s construction will create more than 350 jobs and an additional 120 ongoing roles once the resort is operational. Subject to planning approvals, the InterContinental Barossa Resort & Spa is projected to open in 2028, generating between $70-$100 million annually for the local economy.
As events like the loved Gather Round, Tour Down Under and international concerts continue to call places like the Barossa Valley home, this will be the ultimate spot for visitors looking for a taste of luxury during their travels.
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has welcomed the proposed development, sharing that InterContinental’s involvement would help to connect the resort to a global customer base.
“It is great to see the InterContinental brand being associated with this proposed development, which means that if approved, it immediately becomes part of a global network with an enormous customer base,” he shared.
Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison added, “This is an exciting proposed development for tourism in the Barossa, and for South Australia more broadly.
“The Barossa is a key drawcard for South Australia, with over 768,000 visitor nights in the last year – with 35% of those coming from interstate and 10% coming from overseas,” Minister Jettison said.
“What is clear is that the Barossa needs more luxury accommodation to attract interstate and overseas guests who are seeking high-end, authentic Barossa experiences.”
As one of the world’s leading hotel groups, IHG Hotels & Resorts has properties across the globe, including InterContinental Adelaide.
IHG’s Australasia & Pacific Managing Director, Matthew Tripolone, said “We could not be more delighted to announce the expansion of the InterContinental portfolio and we’re so pleased to be embarking on a partnership with the Strategic Alliance team to bring one of the world’s most recognised brands to the Barossa.”
“We have been looking to expand our presence in South Australia, and we know there’s strong demand for an international luxury hotel in the Barossa region.”
The partnership is sure to create a premier luxury destination in the Barossa.
Director of Strategic Alliance, David Cook said, “We are very pleased to be partnering with the iconic InterContinental brand and thank them for their shared vision in our Barossa project.
“We look forward to our continued positive engagement with IHG and the Barossa, as our team works closely with them in unlocking this opportunity and bringing this project to fruition.”
With the Barossa’s reputation for world-class food and wine experiences, the InterContinental Barossa Resort & Spa will definitely become a must-visit destination for both domestic and international travellers.
