Brass Monkeys Cafe looks like a standard, cute café on the outside, but this Blackwood spot’s food is anything but regular!
The café’s new breakfast and lunch menu features delicious brunch classics like avo on toast and a Croque Monsieur and an Asian-inspired lunch menu that really sets the café apart.
Highlights of the lunch menu are spicy soft-shell crab baos, confit duck leg served with sides like pickled chilli and bao buns, plus an Aburi salmon bowl…which sounds out of this world.
Owner Jindasom Somchaiwong (Jin), tells us that even though the restaurant is relatively new, she is lucky to know Phot Arnupapdecha, her business partner and an experienced chef, well.
“Phot has been in the hospitality industry for more than 10 years,” Somchaiwong says. “She has worked in well-known restaurants in Adelaide such as Blanc Bistro and Grill, Street ADL, Orana, Hardy’s Verandah Restaurant Mount Lofty House, and The Lane Vineyard.”
Somchaiwong and Arnupapdecha knew they wanted to open a cafe in Blackwood.
“When Phot would go to work at The lane in Hahndorf, she would drive past Blackwood and say ‘I really like this area. It’s a great location with really good people.'” Somchaiwong says.
The business partners wanted to change to a summer menu due to seasonally available produce, but they were a bit worried about how their customers would react. Turns out, they had nothing to worry about.
“Actually it’s good because at first we weren’t sure what the customers would think because people loved the old menu, but they wanted more lunch options ,which we gave them,” Somchaiwong says.
“We’ve got great feedback from the locals.”
