Nick Kyrgios pulls out of Adelaide International after injury

One of the Adelaide International drawcards and 2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the Adelaide International due to an ankle injury.

Kyrgios was set to play the second week of the tournament in Adelaide, but the Adelaide International confirmed he had withdrawn from the event due to start on January 10.

This setback means Kyrgios will have not have played any competitive tennis prior to the Australian Open which begins on January 16.

Kyrgios last played at the World Tennis League in December and was set to play at least two events in Australia ahead of the opening Grand Slam of the year.

Alistair MacDonald, Tournament Director, Adelaide International has officially confirmed that Nick Kyrgios will not be playing in Adelaide next week.

“We know that the Adelaide International was a key lead up event for Nick and I know he is disappointed to not be able to play in Adelaide this year. We wish him well for the Australian Open.

“The Adelaide International has become a key lead-in event to the Australian Open for many players. This is reflective of the field including 16 of the top 20 women next week. We wish him well with his preparation for the Australian Open and I hope he recovers in time.”

“The support from the fans and atmosphere at The Drive so far has been phenomenal and we want to keep that momentum going for the entire event. The feedback from the players about the welcome they are receiving is something really special, in a way that only Adelaide can deliver.”

Tickets for matches for the Adelaide International are still avaiable with the likes of Australian players Alexei Popyrin and Thanasi Kokkinakis set to thrill crowds as they progress through the competition.

Adelaide International runs until the 14th of January 2023 at The Drive.
