The large wooden box in the Garden of Unearthly Delights is an unusual and unexpected venue. It stands tall and proud in the middle of the lawn and is home to one of the Fringe’s unusual and unexpected shows.

Dutch troupe Theatergroep WAK asks what ‘nothing’ looks like, setting out to explore the idea.

On the inside, the box is empty except for the audience. A light crosses beneath the floor slats and one by one the all-male cast arrive to explore the nothingness of empty space; the void of having nothing to do and nothing to do it with.

Their blend of physical theatre and clowning is at once prosaic and outrageously funny. Using shadow play, slapstick and one-upmanship, the trio delight in filling the void with absurd pranks, long expressive looks, and sudden bursts of energy, whether it be running in circles or climbing the walls.

Progressively, the void fills into new kinds of nothingness, from the banality of sitting on the toilet to a life in front of the television.

The troupe claim their performances are not meant to be understood but rather, experienced, and the high-jinx are certainly an experience, filled with self-mockery and a box full of a laughter.
