“Citizen of the Year Awards are all about recognising ordinary people in our community who go above and beyond to give back to the community, and make a real difference to the lives of others,” said Adelaide City Council CEO Peter Smith.

“Last year’s winners included chamber musician, soloist, teacher and conductor Keith Crellin OAM for his service to the Arts in South Australia, Fork on the Road events organised by founder Joe Noone won the Event of the Year banner and Young Citizen of the Year went to 24 year old entrepreneur, Chris Hooper.

“Often people working in the community go unrecognised for their efforts, so Citizen of the Year nominations give the community the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the unsung heroes who are committed to enhancing the lives of others through their work,” he said.

There are three categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (person must be 30 years of age or less on 26 January in the year of the award presentation) and Community Event of the Year, and anyone can nominate their preferred individual or organisation.

Nominees could be involved in activities such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, environment, or any other area that adds to the wellbeing of a community.

Nominees for the first two awards must have made a significant contribution to the community, be an inspirational role model, an Australian Citizen, and have had an impact on the City of Adelaide to be eligible.

Community Event of the Year nominees are selected based on the quality of the event, its effect on Council and the impact it has made on the community.

The Fork on the Road, founded by Joe Noone, was the 2014 Event of the Year winner, with judges recognising the way mobile food events have brought people into the city and created a strong sense of community.

“I visited the USA a couple of years ago where I saw for myself the growing popularity of mobile food vending and thought what an opportunity for Adelaide,” said Joe.

“The Fork events have proven very popular and a great way to get people into Adelaide’s unique Squares and Park Lands and take advantage of what’s on offer.

“I was honoured to receive the Community Event of the Year award for Fork on the Road. It’s been a lot of fun but also a lot of work and it feels good to be acknowledged formally.

“Fork is a good example of people with ideas working with Council to create something that benefits the whole community,” he said.

2014 Young Citizen of the Year, Chris Hooper chose to build his career in Adelaide, transforming a traditional accounting firm into one of the most hi-tech practices in the State.

“Many young people leave Adelaide to further their careers, but I could see great opportunity in Adelaide to develop a start-up right here. With all of the brilliant minds coming out of our universities, I have a vision that we can create our own opportunities and give more young people good reasons to stay in Adelaide,” said Chris.

“Being recognised in this way will hopefully inspire other young people to strive for excellence and work towards achieving their personal and professional goals,” he said.

The closing date for submissions is 14 November. Awards will be presented in the Adelaide Town Hall by the Lord Mayor as part of the City of Adelaide, Australia Day celebrations.
