Nominations for City of Adelaide Prize Now Open

Have you recently completed a built project that enhances the public experience of the city? Has the project added to the activation or vibrancy of the city or delivered something unique to the public space? If so, why not nominate it for the 2012 City of Adelaide Prize.

Presented as part of the SA Architecture Awards, run by the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA), the Prize is now open to a greater mix of developments, recognising projects that not only demonstrate good design but also supports activity in the public realm.

“Council is delighted to be broadening the scope of the Adelaide Prize this year,” said Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood.

“Buildings, installations, landscape works, public art installations, performance spaces, playgrounds or any other project relating to the built environment that enhances the public experience are now eligible to enter.”

“It will mean that new and innovative design concepts will be recognised and will ensure that the Prize remains a relevant and important award for design professionals well into the future.”

Entries for the Prize will be open until 1st March 2012. While nominations may be submitted by any person or group, the client and the principal designer / consultant must agree in writing to the nomination being submitted. Projects undertaken by or for the Adelaide City Council, State Government and/or Federal Government Agencies will also be eligible.

The only restrictions are that the project must be physically located within the City of Adelaide area and have been substantially completed within the last two years.

Established by Adelaide City Council in 1997, the Prize has gained a prestigious reputation over the past 14 years. Previous winners include the Bridge over the River Torrens (2010), the Rundle Lantern (2009) and the Glenelg Tramline Extension (2008). Iconic city buildings “The Wave” and “The Edge” by JPE Design Studio Pty Ltd were awarded Commendations in 2011.

While the Prize will continue to be judged and awarded by a jury, this year members of the public will also be able to vote on entries via the people’s choice element.

Winners will be announced at the AIA Awards Presentation on 7th July.
