Plans to upgrade the entire 78km length of the North-South corridor along South Road will be of significant benefit to South Australian motorists.
RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain says a plan to upgrade the entire length of South Road has been a long time coming.
“So far 44km of the 78km corridor between Gawler and Old Noarlunga has already been upgraded,” said Mr Mountain.
“The sections of South Road that have already been completed show how effective these types of upgrades can be.
“Not until all of South Road has been upgraded will we be able to realise the full potential of this north-south corridor.”
RAA is pleased to see the plan makes provision for the need to create detour routes to minimise disruption while the various stages of the work are in progress
“By splitting this significant piece of work into multiple smaller projects it will make it much more manageable to minimise disruption to motorists who use this corridor regularly,” said Mr Mountain.
Along with the potential for job creation, RAA says the benefits of upgrading this route will be immense for the South Australian economy.
“It’s important to provide efficient north-south movement for freight and other transport with good connections to the airport, rail yards, ports and northern industrial areas,” said Mr Mountain.
“The upgrade will also help to cater for predicted traffic growth over the next 15 years.”
The plan outlines the current Torrens to Torrens and Darlington sections of the project are scheduled for completion by 2018.
“In the meantime, we hope the State and Federal governments can work together to ensure adequate funding is made available to put this plan into action,” said Mr Mountain.
