North Adelaide welcomes ABE Ceramics as local artist opens studio to share passion and craft

North Adelaide’s Melbourne Street is now home to ABE Ceramics, a new studio by local artist Ekaterini Kouzionis, offering workshops and unique hand-thrown ceramic pieces just in time for the festive season.

North Adelaide’s vibrancy continues to grow, with the introduction of a new ceramics studio on Melbourne Street. ABE Ceramics, launched by local artist Ekaterini Kouzionis, promises to bring a fresh artistic flair to the community with its specialised offerings in ceramic arts.

Ekaterini, who has been engaged in artistic pursuits from a young age, initially focused on landscape paintings and bespoke prints. However, her interests took a significant turn in 2017 after she attended a wheel throwing class, a gift that sparked a deep passion for ceramic art. “There’s something so therapeutic and rewarding about wheel throwing,” said Ekaterini, reflecting on her initial experiences with the craft.

Her dedication to mastering wheel throwing propelled her from a novice to an adept artist, leading her to sell hand-thrown mugs, espresso cups, platters, bowls, and vases. These items were initially available online and at various markets in Adelaide and Darwin, where she has previously lived. This evolution in her craft set the stage for the next chapter in her career.

This week, Ekaterini opened the doors to ABE Ceramics’s brick-and-mortar studio, marking a significant milestone in her artistic journey. The studio is well-equipped with seven wheels and a full array of tools and supplies necessary for ceramics. It kicked off its operations with the first session of a six-week wheel throwing workshop, designed to cater to both beginners and those looking to refine their skills in ceramics.

Ekaterini spoke about the transition from student to educator, saying “It’s really a full circle moment for me, having once just been a beginner student taking a class for fun, so it’s really exciting that I get to now be the teacher, inspiring others to learn something different.”

Beyond the six-week courses, ABE Ceramics also offers single session experiences where participants can get a taste of wheel throwing. These sessions include the basics of the craft and provide an opportunity for participants to have their creations fired and glazed. With the festive season approaching, the studio has also planned special Christmas ornament workshops, which are expected to attract those looking to add a personal touch to their holiday decorations.

Located at 116/120 Melbourne Street, North Adelaide, ABE Ceramics is poised to become a nurturing ground for budding artists and a hub for the community to engage with the arts in a deeper, more personal way.
