The state is about to come alive with football fever this weekend, as Gather Round officially kicks off.
The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters are set to be a big part of the footy festival, with the iconic Norwood Oval hosting two AFL games:
- Fremantle Vs Gold Coast (Friday, 14 April 2023 – 4.40pm start)
- Greater Western Sydney Vs Hawthorn (Sunday, 16 April 2023 – 2.50pm start)
As part of this exciting event, there will be a number of activations around the Oval which will make it a perfect day out for the family.
On Friday and Sunday, the Norwood Memorial Gardens will explode with vibrancy. There will be live music from local bands such as Brad Lee, Sam Brittain and The Happy Leonards, spinning tunes all afternoon and evening.
Norwood Oval will also play host to the Barossa Boy Wine Tasting Bar, which will be open on both game days. The best part? The wine tastings will be free of charge to patrons.
“We’ve got a brand new wine we’re revealing for the first time, we can’t wait to share it.” said Trent Burge, Winemaker and CEO at Barossa Boy Wines.
Joining Barossa Boy will be Reform Distilling and The Suburban Brew at the Eastside Wine and Ale Trail Stands, with delicious treats for you to enjoy while you’re watching the game.
And of course, there’ll be activations from AFL Auskick and Norwood Football Club, too.
Mayor Robert Bria at City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters said that Gather Round will bring significant cultural and economic benefits to the city.
“As soon as the Premier announced Adelaide would be the host city for Gather Round, the Council moved quickly to formally advise the State Government, the Norwood Football Club and SANFL that we wanted to be a partner in this unique opportunity, and we would consider any reasonable request for help to get a match to The Parade.
“We knew Norwood Oval already ticked a number of boxes regarding the standard of facilities that the AFL would require, having recently completed an $11 million dollar redevelopment, as well as the installation of new lights and LED ribbon lighting around the fence.”
“From that perspective, Norwood Oval has a strategic advantage over the other SANFL grounds, but we also made it clear we were willing to co-fund additional investments as a sign of good faith and that we were serious about the Gather Round.”
“Football is an integral part of our community, and having such a successful club in Norwood with 145 years of history and its home ground right on The Parade, means there is an opportunity to promote the club and the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters at the same time.
“The Council is well aware of the level of expectation and responsibility that comes with hosting two AFL games at Norwood Oval and we have left no stone unturned to make this weekend a memorable experience for local and interstate football fans.”
“This has been a challenging and unprecedented experience for the Council but we have risen to the challenge, we’ve engaged the local business community which has enthusiastically jumped on board, and we’re here to help South Australia deliver the greatest show on turf.”
