Not Just The Best Steak In SA – This Wine Degustation Gets A 10/10 From Us

If you were to ask me if you should check this place out for dinner (on any night), it’s a straight up YES.

Hoosegow Charcoal Restaurant is famous first and foremost for great steak (most recently making the Qantas Travel Insider’s Best Steak in SA list). From what we’ve found though, basically anything you can put on the grill or charcoal here is magic. Seriously. We wouldn’t be surprised if they came up with some kind of charcoaled dessert.
Anywho. We were lucky enough to join them on their recent Mollydooker Wine Degustation. A 5-course meal carefully matched with a Mollydooker vino – in some cases two. Not only was the night filled with fabulous food and wine, there were some informative talks from the winemaker, interactive games (to win wine) and plenty of banter. It was a really fun, casual fare for the wine novice and aficionados alike. The fantastic service and team at Hoosegow and Mollydooker was really just the cherry on top. Before reading any further, if you were to ask me if you should check this place out for dinner (on any night), it’s a straight up YES.

We were seated at our own candlelit table which had on it a Mollydooker wine flight placemat which came in handy. The evening started with the Kingfish ceviche with wakame + 2016 “The Violinist” + 2016 “Scooter” Merlot. A heavenly combination. It was light, fresh and the perfect way to start the evening. The second course was Picante scallops and prawns with charred fennel salad with a gorgeous 2016 The Two Left Feet and 2016 The Boxer. I could have eaten plate upon plate of this.

The Signature chilli chicken cassava, cuban mojo + 2015 Gigglepot Cabernet was easily one of my favourite dishes of the night though. The meat was tender, moist(sorry for dropping the ‘m’ guys word but it was) and flavoursome. This course was paired with the first ever tasting of Mollydooker’s luscious 2016 Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz which was equally incredible. Would recommend.

Next up we had the Chargrilled lamb cutlets, truffle celeriac mash, pancetta crumb, red wine jus and confit garlic + 2014 “Enchanted Path” Shiraz Cabernet + 2014 “Carnival of Love” Shirzaz. This was what we came for. Great meat. And we were not disappointed. The juiciness of the lamb and creamy mash hit the spot on one of the coldest nights in winter.

By the time dessert came around, we were STUFFED. Portion sizes were fantastic – if not a little too generous. But we pushed through and took on for the team (you’re welcome). The Caramelised figs, dark chocolate and roasted hazelnut marquise with vanilla labneh was divine… and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t normally gravitate towards figs.

Overall, it was a 10/10 wine dinner. The food was on point, we got to try some incredible wine and fell in love with Molly(dooker). We look forward to the next wine degustation!
