Not So Dry July At The Henry Austin Begins

A sterling line up of winemakers are set to parade through the now fully stocked Chesser Cellars as part of Not-So-Dry July with The Henry Austin.

There have been countless in Adelaide who have been caught within the spell of the transformation of the old Chessar Cellars. Mostly, that just comes from meeting co-owner Maxwell James Mason, who is a larger-than-life figure swanning about the Austin daily, often in a velour smoking jacket with a story or two to tell.

If you haven’t yet, July might just be your month to do so as the incredible downstairs cellars are now full. Yes, this is a functioning bottle shop, stocked with wall-to-wall wine from some of South Australia’s finest names, all running on a consignment basis which we’ve been told is a first for anywhere in the world (that might reveal itself soon, who knows!). It’s a bottleshop, in the heart of the city centre operating from 10am to 10pm 6 days a week (just closed Sundays). It’s also a place where the diners (and frequenting drinkers) can meet the winemakers, ask them questions, dine alongside them and find out more, in their quest to find a favourite wine.

As Max puts it, “it’s a cocking exciting place” and if you haven’t experienced the nooks and crannies, the marriage of history and the new or the eccentricities of The Henry Austin and Chesser Cellars yet, then make sure July is your month to do so. Friday at 5, starting today, you can head down beneath the street to the fully stocked Chesser Cellars to meet the makers themselves. Because July is kind, there will be five opportunities this month with the likes of Inkwell, Vinteloper and Down The Rabbit Hole all in attendance. The after the tasting you are encourage to stay and dine with the makers themselves upstairs in the Austin and sample their out-of-this-world interpretation of Australian Yum Cha (it’s not that scary, basically plates come as the chef prepares them and you can eat as much or little as you like). Here is the full program for your leisurely perusal.
