What do you get when you cross a bustling bar with a funeral business?
A Social Undertaking.
Seriously. A Social Undertaking is a brand new bar in the CBD and its… deadly. This little bar with a big (beating) heart is all about coffins. And there’s a reason for it.
Owners Joelie and her partner Col also run a funeral home. That’s right. They’re undertakers, and this is their social undertaking.
“We’re both undertakers by day. We nurture, honour and respectfully care for people and families in their darkest hours. If this hasn’t taught us hospitality, I don’t know what will.”
There will be a coffin lid light feature on the ceiling in front of the bar, a coffin base drawing board for punters’ contributions, and other quirky additions that will really make this bar unique. The wine bottles have little branded toe tags. You get the gist.
But whilst there plenty of coffins, this place isn’t creepy at all. Despite the name and the background, the bar won’t be gothic and death based, but it will aim to shine gentle and refreshing light upon an industry so greatly shielded from the public view.
Joelie and Col are shifting the bar from the dive-bar feel to a comfortable, easy-going space with a welcoming feel.
“We have added couches, adjusted the lighting and music, and pared it back in terms of clutter.”
Drinks wise, A Social Undertaking will focus on beautiful bespoke South Australian wines, interesting and unique craft beers, and a wealth of cocktails like the traditional espresso martini, and an ode to the original moonshine martini.
There’s also a dessert cocktail called the Undertaker, which is made by undertakers only, and is presented with a tiny black shovel to eat the ice cream.
