NOW OPEN: Adelaide’s newest female-led tattoo shop The Gilded Goblin opens its doors

Taboos behind tattoos are diminishing thanks to establishments like The Gilded Goblin, Adelaide Arcade’s newest and first-ever tattoo studio.

Adelaide Arcade has welcomed The Gilded Goblin as its newest shopfront, this tattoo studio is breaking edgy ground to complement the strong artistic offering in Adelaide Arcade.

Taboos behind tattoos are diminishing thanks to establishments like The Gilded Goblin, which is Arcade’s first-ever tattoo studio.

Owned by queer female artists Allanah Pankhurst and George Gilles, Allanah says the experience of getting permanent ink can be intimidating, but the studio’s concept is one of providing a safe space for all.

“We wanted to provide a safe, inclusive space for clients and artists, free of intimidation, where artists can feel comfortable and clients feel supported and empowered,” said Allanah.

We chose The Gilded Goblin for the name because we know that a lot of trans, non-binary and gender queer people identify with goblin culture.

“We wanted to project our ethos in the name so that clients knew it was a safe space where their bodily
autonomy and pronouns would always be respected.”

Beginning from a deep passion for art, Allanah and George are joined in the studio by resident artist Aneta Szumny and apprentice Taylor Clayton.

Allanah says the idea for The Gilded Goblin also came from a push for more female representation in the
industry.

“The industry is still quite male-dominated, and through our experiences, we recognised the dire need for more female-run artist collectives,” said Allanah.

The team specialises in neotraditional, illustrative and pop culture creations, and collectively have more than 10 years’ experience.

Adorned with mirrors to create an old-world vibe, the choice to create a home in Adelaide Arcade was an easy one.

“We want to facilitate, and contribute to, the change that’s happening in this industry. We want to remain a safe haven for clients–for all goblins great and small–and encourage other female and gender-diverse artists to get a foothold in the industry and do the same,” said Allanah.

The Gilded Goblin is now open at Level 1, Shop 135 &13, Adelaide Arcade, and work is done by appointment only through the website www.thegildedgoblintattoo.com and check out their work.
