Aphelion Wine, a small (but mighty) family winery from McLaren Vale has announced the opening of their first cellar door on Kays Road. They’re taking over the stunning spot previously occupied by Heidrun Estate, who said goodbye in June. Aphelion Wine is now all set to welcome guests starting this month, hosting a soft opening weekend from Friday July 12th through to Monday July 15th.

Heidrun Estate, known for their charming lavender garden and “Instagramable” cellar door, became a popular spot for locals. Aphelion Wine plans to maintain the charm of the location, while putting their own spin on things.

“We’re keeping it reasonably similar, but changing a few things up and switching the focus back to the wine side of things,” Aphelion Wine Co-Owner and Winemaker, Rob Mack, says.

Established in 2014 and celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, Aphelion Wine is all about Grenache. From humble beginnings with just two wine barrels, they’ve grown into offering a range of Grenache wines and a few other tasty picks. Despite their incredible growth, they stick to small-scale production to keep that top-notch quality flowing.

“We have stayed pretty small production wise, obviously growing from two barrels, but just slow growth,” Rob says.

“We are just trying to keep everything within the family. We want to keep the quality high and the volume on the lower side of things.”

The new cellar door boasts stunning views of vineyards on one side and serene scrubland on the other. Guests will be able to step out onto a spacious deck with a cool, semi-circular outdoor lounge area, ideal for soaking in the scenery. They’ve also got picnic tables set up, perfect for enjoying wine al fresco, along with a kids’ area for families.

Guests can choose from various tasting options, including their everyday range and exclusive reserve tastings. But, we don’t need to tell you anymore, because this weekend, you can try the wines and see the space for yourself.

Aphelion Wine is hosting a soft launch this weekend from Friday through till Monday, with opportunities to try their acclaimed Grenache and Mediterranean selections in a chilled, friendly and fun setting.

A highlight of the experience is their ‘make your own platter’ station, stocked with local cheeses, olives, and all the good stuff. Plus, they’ll have gluten-free and vegan options. Crafted from old wine barrels, these boards let you create a tasting adventure that’s uniquely yours.

“I’ve got a mate who’s made up some boards for us from old wine barrels,” Rob says.

“That way people can just load up with and grab whatever they want.”
