FIRST LOOK: Henry’s by Franklie brings a taste of Italy to Kent Town

A new cafe, deli, and wine bar combo has opened up just outside of the city, bringing classic Italian vibes to the suburbs.

Henry’s by Franklie has opened its doors in Kent Town, bringing the perfect mix of food, wine, and good times to the suburbs.

Henry’s comes from the mind of Daniel Franklin. Dan has been working in the hospitality space for years and is blending his passions at Henry’s. Taking elements from classic Italian wine bars and delis, and the top-notch cafe culture we have here in Australia, Henry’s will be a one-stop shop for great food, wine, and coffee.

“I’ve got a couple of wine labels, Mosquito Hill Wines and Franklie Wines. Originally, the whole concept was going to be a city cellar door, but it’s evolved into what Henry’s is now,” shared Dan.

“Henry’s is a mix between a cafe, a deli, and a wine bar, which is pretty exciting. It’s loosely based on my wife and I’s love for Italy, especially Tuscany. They’ve got such a good wine culture over there, and the community always gets together over food and wine and that’s sort of what we’re trying to do in Kent Town. A bit more of a unique offering for the area.

“My background is in hospitality, so opening a place was always something I was going to do down the track. When the opportunity came up with the space in Kent Town, there’s a lot of development happening at the moment and plans for the future for Kent Town, I thought it was the perfect spot.”

With Kent Town’s mix of residential and commercial, Henry’s diverse offering is sure to please those in need of a morning coffee, a bite to eat for lunch, or even an evening drink.

“There’s a lot happening, and I feel like there’s been a bit of a move away from the city as well post Covid, I think people are looking for things to do in the suburbs, so with us being sort of on the city-fringes, we hope it will appeal to the masses.”

Henry’s is open Monday through Wednesday from 7am to 3pm, and it has a more cafe-like and retail vibe. On Thursdays and Fridays, it is open from 7am until late, and in the afternoon, it transitions into a bar with snacks and drinks.

“We’ll have Italian meatballs in sugo with baguette, charcuterie and cheese boards, which is all more of that wine bar vibe. The baked brie is one of our hot ones at the moment, it seems to be pretty popular.

“During the day we’ve got everything from muffins and brownies to croissants, quiches, and focaccia, which we’re almost selling out of every day. These are the sort of things you want to see a couple of weeks after opening!”

If you get down to Henry’s and you’re unsure of what to go for, Daniel has a few recommendations.

“If it’s during lunch I would go for our signature Henry’s foccacia, which has mortadella, prosciutto, pickles, mustard, and cheese. If you’re coming in at night for a glass of wine I think it would be hard to go past our Italian meatballs in sugo with baguette, and a glass of Franklie Wines Shiraz 2023.”

So whether you’ve been looking for a new morning coffee spot or somewhere to enjoy a night of delicious food (and equally as delicious wine), check out Henry’s by Franklie in Kent Town.
