We all know that Adelaide is home to an incredibly diverse range of cuisines, including a bunch of fantastic Sri Lankan restaurants, serving up the best biryani rice, savoury curries, and sambals for the food enthusiasts of Adelaide to indulge in.

In mid-2023, the streets of Unley were spiced up with the opening of Taprobane, delighting foodies with the aromas, flavours, cultural icons, and aesthetics of Sri Lanka. With a “taste of Ceylon” as its slogan, the Sri Lankan restaurant draws cultural references from ancient Silk Road traditions to the bustling streets of today, where tuk-tuks and intoxicating kitchen aromas flow through the streets.

Now, Taprobane has expanded into a brand new, lively courtyard oasis. Step into the spirit of Sri Lanka at ‘Waadiya’, your new go-to spot for authentic Sri Lankan flavours. Picture a lively courtyard space decorated with ambient outdoor lighting and the aromas of freshly grilled Kottu, steaming egg hoppers straight from the pan, and the irresistible flavours of Sri Lankan street food brought to life.

Nestled in the heart of Taprobane, Waadiya offers an atmospheric dining experience inspired by Sri Lanka’s bustling streets and warm coastal vibes. Here, a bold menu packed with street food favourites celebrates the authentic tastes of Sri Lanka, featuring bold spices and mouthwatering aromas.

Their live Kottu station brings your dish to life right beside your table. The traditional Sri Lankan dish consists of chopped roti, a meat curry, scrambled egg, onions, and chillies. From the first slice to the final toss, every plate of Kottu at Waadiya is crafted just the way you like it, offering more than just a meal: a performance of flavour and culture.

Other standouts on the menu include their egg fried rice, egg kottu, hoppers, katta sambol (chilli condiment), seeni sambol (caramelised onion chutney or relish), and kiri pani, a traditional dessert with yoghurt and treacle.

Umesh and Shreeni Randeniya, the owners of Taprobane, are seasoned explorers of the world’s palates. When they opened Taprobane in 2023, it became the third addition to their successful restaurant portfolio, which includes Agape Greek Cuisine and Amor Restaurant & Bar, a celebration of Spanish and Portuguese flavours.

Everything at Taprobane is tailor-made, from the bespoke bar to the commissioned paintings, including the clay pots that were made to match every dish on their extensive menu. To guarantee the integrity of every dish, Umesh invited chefs from Sri Lanka to join his kitchen.

While still in the early stages of opening up the new space, the menu will continue to be updated as we roll into the new year. But in the meantime, gather a crew and indulge in some authentic Sri Lankan food under the stars at Waadiya, Taprobane’s new outdoor dining experience.
