NOW OPEN! RSPCA unveils new $23m animal care campus

RSPCA South Australia is celebrating the grand opening of its new animal care campus today, located on the north-west corner of the South and Majors Roads intersection.

This state-of-the-art facility brings together all RSPCA staff, volunteers, and animals onto a single site for the first time, aiming to advance animal welfare standards across the state.

The campus, which includes a wildlife hospital and best-practice animal accommodation, is designed to cater to the 9000-plus animals that come into the organisation’s care each year. It’s also set to become an educational hub for the community.

In anticipation of the opening, RSPCA SA has been actively seeking foster carers for dogs that were temporarily housed at the new campus, especially following the recent closure of the Lonsdale shelter.

Animal Operations Manager Billy Tubman explained the early action taken: “Rather than wait until we open to the public, we’ve decided to get the ball rolling early on getting dogs out into foster care due to these recent seizures of animals by our inspectors.”

Billy added, “We keep seized animals in protective custody while investigations continue, and to make space for these new ones that have come in, we need dogs currently with us to go into foster care.”

The RSPCA assures that all animal care costs, including veterinary expenses, for fostered animals are covered through donations. Billy highlighted the unique opportunity for foster carers: “If people are able to foster an animal now, they will be escorted by one of our staff while onsite as it remains an active construction site.”

He also noted the special preview foster carers could get: “Anyone who has fostered a rescue animal will tell you that the rewards are huge, and for just the next few days the big-hearted decision to foster comes with the added bonus of a sneak peak at this incredible new facility before it opens. Notwithstanding any further delays, we anticipate we’ll be open next Monday.”
