You might know The Summertown Aristologist as the quaint farm-to-table restaurant in the Adelaide Hills serving up natural wines, fresh and local food and good company. But there’s more to it…
In 2020 they turned the restaurant’s neighbouring office space into a tiny cellar door and bottle shop before deciding the space wasn’t right for that kind of venture and a wine bar would be more suitable.
“Overall, a cellar door didn’t work in that space, there’s not a beautiful lake to look at or a manicured lawn. Where as a wine bar is always something we’ve wanted to do and it lends itself to the area better,” co-owner Aaron Fenwick says.
Last month the team, Anton van Klopper, Jasper Button and Aaron, re-developed the new space to become a place where you can roll up without a booking, have a glass of wine, a delicious snack, and take a bottle home.
“The idea is simple: it’s just glasses of wine, or a bottle if you need, with simple snacks in the afternoon between lunch and dinner,” Aaron says.
Open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the new 24-seat space features a great porch area with beautiful wooden tables.
“I want to separate it a bit from The Aristologist Restaurant where the menu changes week to week with produce from our garden in Basket Range. At the wine bar we want to make it a bit different and source from other people doing cool thing,” Aaron says.
The wine bar will be serving up local produce from other suppliers like De Palma Salumi, Olasagasti anchovies, Selection 28 cheese, Nice Pickles’ briney snacks. They will also have their Aristologist signiture sourdough bread.
The drinks on offer will still feature cellar door stars like wines from Australian producers Poolside, Pretty Fun, The Other Right, Shobbrook Wines and Latta Vino. You’ll also be able to order beer and seasonal cocktails.
