NYD press conference announces 2100 positive cases, and surge in hospitalisations

There were 2100 positive cases announced today, as hospitalisations nearly doubled.

Following yesterday’s announcement of a South Australian business support package, and changed arrangements for interstate and international visitors to SA, another press conference was held today at noon.

At today’s New Year’s Day press conference with Premier Steven Marshall, he opened by saying they’d just concluded their covid-ready committee meeting.

He then thanked South Australians for spending New Year’s Eve safely.

23,790 tests were conducted yesterday, which is one of the highest testing days we’ve had, in extremely difficult heat conditions. Marshall then thanked those who were working on those frontlines.

There were 2100 positive cases announced today.

There has been quite a surge in hospital admissions, with 71 patients in hospital, up from 40.

They are still doing analysis on Delta vs Omicron, but it seems that of 39 tested in hospital, 36 were Omicron.

In Port Augusta there has been waste water positive results, and they found someone working there who has tested positive, and three people working with them are being tested, but there’s quite a number of people at risk, so dealing with that will be a priority to contain the risk there as quickly as possible.

36 people in prison in SA have tested Mobilong Prison in Murray Bridge, the Adelaide Women’s Prison, and the Pre- Release Centre, so they’re continuing to monitor that situation. Marshall then said they have real concerns about disability sector, and aged care sector and are ensuring they are providing appropriate support there.

There’s been a further surge in vaccinations yesterday, and Marshall wanted to give a shout out to GPs and pharmacists, who are really going above and beyond to assist with this. There were a large number of people getting their first dose, many getting their second dose, and over 8k got boosters yesterday.
