Every town has its secrets.
Nestled within the picturesque heart of our northern tourism triangle, historic Robertstown is the gateway to our Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and the tourist town of Burra. And from this month it’s now home for discerning travellers wanting to get away or explore our State’s wines and history.
Robertstown was established in the late 1800s, named after the region’s first postmaster, John Roberts. At first, it appears to be little more than a sleepy town just over an hour’s drive from Adelaide but its sporting clubs, motorcycling events and prime location makes it ideal for any weekend escape.
The secret? Old Store 17, a former general store built in 1917 and now fully restored into a high-class luxury Bed and Breakfast. With its century-old pressed metal ceilings, accessible accommodation, catering options that include plant-based meals, a reading library, courtyard, on-site parking and more, Old Store 17 has opened its doors as our latest holiday indulgence.

Featuring two large bedrooms with ensuites, the old-world charm of the interior can’t be ignored with its wooden floorboards, leather lounges, reading library and frosted storefront window. The shared lounge and dining rooms are spacious and brightly lit by the large windows – one of which has been cordoned off and turned into a community display, highlighting either the history of the region or seasonal festivities.
The BnB boasts a wheelchair accessible bedroom and ensuite, while the breakfast menu that’s included in the price boasts plant-based meal options for those not partial to meat or dairy.

For owner Phillip Halsall, Old Store 17 has been a long-term dream, having travelled extensively and rarely finding quality accommodation that equally caters to a vegan diet or those differently abled.
“I wanted to create a space that would be welcoming for everyone; one that was truly equal regardless of disability, dietary needs, sexuality or income. I envisaged a luxury, affordable home away from home in the heart of South Australia’s most beautiful and interesting regions. After years of planning how to do that and restoring this incredible heritage building, I’m so excited to finally be opening the doors.”
With either afternoon tea or a wine and cheese platter on arrival, and a late checkout of 12 noon, Old Store 17 ensures guest are pampered from the moment they arrive to their lazy midday departure. In between, there’s two major wine regions just a short drive in either direction, nature walks through the Hallelujah Hills, a jaunt down memory lane in historic Burra, or a sci-fi worthy selfie awaiting at World’s End.
Plenty or nothing are the ultimate options at Old Store 17, but both come with fine dining and even finer comfort.
Old Store 17 is located on the main street of Robertstown with full details on their website.
