OMG! A New Thai Street Food Restaurant (Literally) Just Opened

The latest Thai restaurant to hit Adelaide’s food scene looks incredible.

Imagine walking down a backstreet in Bangkok, chowing down on some delicious authentic Thai street food: that’s the exact same feeling you’re promised to get when you take your first bite of food from Nu Suandokmai’s new restaurant, Lantern by Nu.

Opening today in a trendy, converted house on Selby St (just off Gouger St) you can expect some of the best Thai street food in Adelaide using seasonal produce and a Thai-style brunch on the weekends.

Inspired by traditional Thai cooking and modern fusion, Lantern by Nu is an homage to Thai street food. Not much fuss, but with Thai flavours and original dishes he’s been cooking his entire life, he’s even included recipes from his mother’s repertoire.

Lantern by Nu has been a long time coming. Nu’s been travelling the world, cooking up a storm wherever he goes, but now feels it’s time for him to settle down in the place he got his start – Adelaide. Nu came to Adelaide in 1988 and began his cooking journey here. 15 years ago, he met Lantern’s head chef Peter Westfield in Sydney. There they worked together until Nu opened Nu’s Thai and asked him and Paul Webster to join him. The restaurant was really successful, and upon Nu’s return to Adelaide, he branched out and tried many different styles of cooking.

Staying true to his Adelaide beginning, most of the produce at Lantern will be locally sourced; you can expect meals full to the brim with local produce, but with Thai flavours and influences. With cocktails set to be on the menu, as well as a range of local and international wines, they’ve got the food and the booze we know you love.

The venue is rustic and rough around the edges with exposed brick, polished black timber floors, a massive timber bar, a street art mural, and lighting and lanterns adorning the ceiling to keep true to the name. With a 120-capacity, their functions are booking up quickly – they already have a wedding and a few Christmas parties locked in – so if you’re looking for a unique event space with delicious food, you’ll want to get in soon.

With a unique atmosphere, a brilliant venue and with the food being second to none, it’s definitely a place you’ll want to have a sticky beak in. With Nu behind the wheel, they can’t go wrong.
