Last night was a momentous one for One Direction fans across the country, as the boys kicked off their sold out Australian tour in Adelaide. The first of three shows in SA saw the expected hoards of fans lining up at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for hours beforehand, and the media frenzy was there to match.

5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) were well received as the supporting act, and successfully geared the crowd up with a heart pumping performance. Directioners however, were there for one thing, and one thing only, and they didn’t have long to wait.

A film clip of One Direction set the scene before the biggest band in the world hit the stage. The set was reminiscent of a modern and vibrant London city and was perfect for the show that was to come. Then the screams of excitement really started. The roar was so great you could have mistaken the rumble in the stadium for an earthquake!

One Direction started their set with ‘Up All Night’.

Breaking with the stereotypical boy band ‘scripted’ performance, the guys did things their own way, including an impromptu interview at the start of the concert, where Louis Tomlinson started asking the other members about what they have been up to within the past few weeks and how they were feeling.

The band then performed ‘I Would’ followed by ‘Heart Attack’, ‘More Than This’, ‘Loved You First’, ‘One Thing’ and ‘C’mon C’mon’. Not only did they sing well, but they were constantly talking to their fans between songs. Of course the only replies they received were screams of admiration.

Catching the whole arena by surprise, the boys were lifted into the air by a platform while singing ‘Change My Mind’, causing the fans to shriek in excitement as they watch their favourite member(s) descend like angels onto the smaller stage towards the back of the venue. Watching as they infected fans with their energy and smiles, even a neutral spectator could appreciate their impact on the audience as they continued on with ‘One Way Or Another’, ‘Last First Kiss’ and ‘Moments’.

During their performance, the One Direction members answered a few questions which fans had left them on twitter. One of which being ‘Can you do an Australian accent?’ I had to admit, watching the boys imitate our accent was hilarious, but you had to give credit to them for trying.

Live While We’re Young’, ‘Summer Love’, ‘Over Again’ and ‘Little Thing’ (which is their favourite song on the album) were performed in a relaxed mood. After softening our hearts with the lower energy songs, they did a cover of ‘Teenage Dirt Bag’ which opened another set of songs including ‘Rock Me’, ‘Not Afraid’ and ‘Kiss You’ which were full of energy and made everyone stand up to dance and sing along. However, during ‘Kiss You’ the fans felt a sense of shock and horror when Louis slipped and fell on stage. As quickly as it happened, he was back up and singing again, and a loud roar of happy cheers and screams signalled everyone’s relief!

To finish off their amazing first event in Adelaide, ‘Best Song Ever’ and ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ was performed with exploding streamers and large balloons dropping from above to finish off their party theme.  It was a fantastic end to a night which the fans would describe as #bestnightofmylife. Directioners definitely will not be disappointed!
