Fleet Space Technologies launch competition to land SA student design on the moon

A South Australian secondary student will be lucky enough to have their design touch down on the moon with an out-of-this-world competition.

In an out-of-this-world competition, one lucky South Australian secondary student’s design will be the next big thing to touch down on the Moon. Yes, you read that correctly: the real-life Moon.

The exciting competition is being rolled out by Fleet Space Technologies and the winning student will see their design travel to the Moon, becoming part of lunar history.

To make the journey into outer space, the winning design will be 3D printed onto the shell of Fleet’s innovative SPIDER device, which stands for ‘Seismic Payload for Interplanetary Discovery, Exploration, and Research.’

This miniature seismic station is headed on a mission near the Moon’s South Pole to gather seismic data as part of the ‘Moon to Mars Initiative.’ The data could deepen our understanding of lunar soil and further the quest for ice deposits, which are pivotal findings if humanity dreams of setting foot and thriving beyond our blue planet.

The $150 million Moon to Mars Initiative is led by the Federal Government as part of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources and supports Australian businesses and researchers to join NASA’s endeavour to go forward to the Moon and on to Mars.

This will be the very first time the SPIDER device will touch the Moon’s surface. The design brief? Let the future of space exploration inspire you. The design must also adhere to the ‘Tech Specs’ to fit the dimensions of the SPIDER- which is very small, as the SPIDER is embarking on a genuine space journey which demands a compact and robust design, and colour printing also isn’t an option.

Designs will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Originality – does it stand out from the crowd?
  • Design – is it planned and crafted with finesse?
  • Inspiration –  what is the story behind the design?
  • 3D printing suitability – does it meet the Tech Specs?

The perks for the winner don’t stop at just interstellar glory, they will also receive two custom SPIDER devices featuring their design- one as a personal keepsake and the other as a gift for their school, along with an exclusive tour of Fleet’s HQ with 20 of their chosen guests.

Entries are open and close November 3rd, 9pm ACDT. The lucky winner will be announced November 28th, 11am ACDT. So students, the universe awaits your creativity- and you can only submit one design, so make sure you choose your best work.
